Cambridge
Cambridge is one of the most historic academic cities in Europe with a tradition of scholarship going back 800 years. The earliest record dates back to 1209 when scholars congregated in, what was then a Roman trading post, for the purpose of study. In 1284 Peterhouse was founded by the Bishop of Ely, followed by Clare College in 1326. Today, Cambridge is one of the world's leading research universities, home to some of the most famous scientific minds, whilst the Cambridge Footlights has produced some of our best-loved entertainers
The city itself is compact and easy to get around. Medieval streets, picturesque gardens and a historic market place sit alongside independent shops, high street stores, markets, cafes, bars and restaurants. Clare College is within easy walking distance from the centre.
Cambridge is also famous for punting along the River Cam. Similar to the Venetian gondola, the punt was designed in medieval times to navigate shallow waters and is now enjoyed by students and tourists alike.
