IMO SECRETARY-GENERAL, EFTHIMIOS MITROPOULOS, NAMED SEATRADE PERSONALITY 2008

Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary-General, International Maritime Organization, was named Seatrade Personality 2008 in recognition of his outstanding leadership of the Organisation over the last five years, and in particular his strong response to the need for a holistic and multilateral IMO reaction to worldwide concern about air emissions from ships.
“I am delighted to receive this auspicious Award in the 20th anniversary year”said Efthimios Mitropoulos. Referring to the IMO’s recent agreement on sulphur limits and it’s response to this environmental challenge, Mitropoulos said“it is important that we stay united and work together. If we do that everything will be possible.”
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal presented the awards at the Seatrade Awards 20th Anniversary Ceremony Dinner last night. Over 350 members of the maritime community gathered in London’s magnificent Guildhall to celebrate the outstanding contributions made over the last year, as well as marking the significant milestone celebrating 20 years of excellence.
“In the past 20 years the Seatrade Awards have increased in stature and recognition”,HRH The Princess Royal announced. “It’s still a struggle to get the general public informed about the importance of shipping in the modern world” noted HRH. She singled out one of the new categories (Seatrade Young Person In Shipping), saying “long term this may prove to be a very important award”.
The Seatrade Global Performer Award 2008 was won by DP World, one of the world's leading marine terminal operators, with 43 terminals and 13 new developments in 28 countries, led by its flagship operation at Jebel Ali in Dubai. In London to receive the Award was Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Group Chief Executive Officer of Port & Free Zone World, the holding company of DP World, Economic Zone World and P & O Ferries, and Vice Chairman of DP World.
The winner of the newly established Seatrade Young Person in Shipping Award was Sadan Kaptanoglu, Managing Director of H.I Kaptanoglu Ship Management Company and board member of Kaptanoglu Holding. Ms Kaptanoglu is a leading voice among the younger generation in the Turkish Chamber of Shipping and a major supporter of the Turkish Maritime Education Foundation, and combines her business life with studies for a PhD degree at De Montfort University.
The Seatrade Awards programme was introduced to highlight and recognise the industry’s efforts in improving maritime standards and to award those at the forefront of new thinking. The independent judging panel, chaired by Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary-General of the IMO, selected the winners of the 2008 awards as follows:

HRH THE PRINCESS ROYAL TO BE GUEST OF HONOUR AT THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY SEATRADE AWARDS CEREMONY DINNER

Seatrade is delighted to announce that Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal will be the Guest of Honour at the 20th Anniversary Awards Ceremony Dinner on Monday 21st April 2008.
“It is an enormous honour to have The Princess Royal presenting the awards at our 20th Anniversary Ceremony Dinner. It will be the third time she has attended the event,” commented Christopher Hayman, Seatrade’s Chairman.
Seatrade Awards is the leading scheme for recognition of achievement and innovation within the international maritime community, promoting excellence in maritime standards, and rewarding those making outstanding contributions to safety at sea and protection of the marine environment.
Double celebrations will be taking place at London’s magnificent Guildhall, commemorating the outstanding achievements of the last year and marking the 20th Anniversary of the Seatrade Awards. The 2008 ceremony will be a truly spectacular event, attended by over 400 members of the maritime community.
Her Royal Highness will present Awards in the following categories: Safety at Sea (sponsored by Lloyd’s Register), Protection of the Marine & Atmospheric Environment (sponsored by ABS), Innovation in Ship Operations, Investment in People (sponsored by NAMEPA), Seatrade Personality 2008. The Seatrade Young Person In Shipping 2008 (sponsored by Drydocks World) and Seatrade Global Performer 2008 are making their debut this year.
The evening commences with a pre-dinner reception (sponsored by Det Norske Veritas), followed by a four-course dinner (menu & seating plan sponsored by Rolls-Royce), at which the Awards are presented. Winners are selected just hours before the ceremony and are not known by anyone except the judging panel of leading industry personalities, chaired by IMO’s Secretary-General Efthimios Mitropoulos. The evening will come to a close with entertainment and after dinner drinks.
In keeping with the non-profit making motives of the Seatrade Awards programme, Seatrade will make a donation from the proceeds to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and The Mission to Seafarers.

ANNOUNCING THE PANEL OF JUDGES FOR 2008 SEATRADE AWARDS
Seatrade is delighted to announce the panel of judges for the 2008 Awards who will be selecting the winners in four categories: Safety at Sea, Protection of the Marine & Atmospheric Environment, Innovation in Ship Operations, Investment in People.
The 2008 Awards mark the 20th Anniversary of the prestigious Seatrade scheme.
The independent panel of judges will be chaired by:
Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary-General, International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
The Judges:

Three new categories for the 2008 Seatrade Awards
The Seatrade Awards scheme offers an unrivalled opportunity to attain recognition for a new product, service, system or concept from a uniquely independent judging panel. The panel is chaired by Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary-General of the IMO, who urges you to consider entering the Seatrade Awards scheme, which is seeking innovative solutions from around the world.
This internationally acclaimed scheme celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and in time-honoured fashion continues to recognise and reward innovation and success in the maritime industry.
There are four prestigious Awards to be won:
Safety at Sea
Protection of the Marine and Atmospheric Environment
Innovation in Ship Operations
New for 2008 – Investment in People
An independent judging panel assesses all entries and compiles a short-list. The finalists are then notified before the judges make the final selection on the day of the Seatrade Awards Ceremony Dinner.
Additional awards will also be presented for the following categories:
Seatrade Personality 2008 awarded to an individual for an outstanding personal contribution to the shipping industry.
New for 2008 – Seatrade Young Person in Shipping 2008 presented to an individual under 40 who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry.
New for 2008 – Seatrade Global Performer 2008 awarded to a company or organisation that has made a major contribution to the shipping industry in any field.
In these categories, nominations are submitted by the international business community and the winner is chosen by Seatrade.
The winners of each category will be presented with a unique, hand-crafted trophy in the magnificent surroundings of London’s Guildhall on Monday 21st April 2008, where over 400 guests from the shipping world will applaud the finalists and enjoy a spectacular night out.
The Seatrade Awards are free to enter, and there are no restrictions on the number of entries you can submit. The deadline is 31 December 2007.
